Mom and I visited Xoximilco on our last night in Mexico. Xoxmilco’s website says…
“Xoximilco Cancun is a perfect destination for young lovers and enchanted travelers seeking a romantic afternoon, or a Mexican-style party, eating, drinking and dancing to the mariachi music all along the way. The trajineras are a spectacle themselves; brightly painted and have names eluding the States of the Mexican Republic. Every day, Xoximilco transforms into fiesta-filled the canals with party trajineras, musicians, and marimba players. The mariachis will serenade your boat then the fun really begins! Enjoy the prehispanic legends that will make you travel through Mexico’s history, typical Mexican games and the traditional flavors of an authentic Mexican cuisine. At the end of the night, the trajineras will gather in one place so you can dance, sing and all together create a big feast.
Live and enjoy the Mexican spirit in a genuine party full of music, color and fun!”
Sounds awesome, right? Everything they said was completely accurate. But let me tell you, the tickets were not cheap so we had envisioned something a little classier but it turned out to be a tourist trap that reminded us of the Disney ride “It’s a Small World” but with booze.
BUT, we certainly chose to make the most of it and still had a FANTASTIC time. Our attitudes and interaction with the people around us determine our level of enjoyment. So we chose to have fun. Not gonna lie, we also got some enjoyment from laughing at how cheesy we thought it was. The hosts of our gondola style boats were very knowledgeable about Mexican culture, super friendly and just wanted to make sure we all had fun. And we did have fun!
So the food was nasty. Even the chips… stale chips were handed out in a little plastic bag that made us laugh. But thankfully there was more to the evening than the food.
We danced. I’m not a dancer but sometimes I stop caring how I look dancing and worry about how I feel when dancing. I had a blast. I danced, I laughed and I got an incredible workout.
Did I mention they have bottles and bottles of Tequila on board and it’s all included in the price of ticket? I didn’t have any but all the bottles were emptied out on our boat. It wasn’t shortly after these dancing pics were taken that we watched a drunk man fall overboard and several of the employees had to pull him back on the boat. They acted like it was no big deal and said “happens every night” probably while uttering under their breath, ‘stupid Americans’. ha! Then we went back to dancing.
And then it really got crazy! Has anyone ever seen one of these boxes before? It’s a homemade shock box. I wish I got the picture from the couple that was seated across from me. They captured my expression trying it for the first time perfectly. The power of this took me by surprise that’s for sure. You could say it SHOCKED me! See what I did there? 😉 So the entire boat holds hands and then they start the shock at it’s lowest level and then keep turning it up. My arms tingled all the way up to my elbows before I let go. It doesn’t seem like a smart thing to do but yet I did it again. ha!
We danced, sang, met awesome people from around the world, and got to spend time together. So it couldn’t be bad! So while it wasn’t what we were envisioning we had a fantastic night filled with lots of laughs! Memories matter. And mom and I make memories no matter where we go!
XOXOXO
